A HEIC viewer that just works
Sometimes you don’t want to convert anything — you just need to see what a HEIC
file contains. Maybe someone sent you photos from an iPhone and your PC refuses to open them, or
you’re sorting through a folder of .heic files trying to find the right one. This
viewer decodes HEIC right in your browser and shows the picture immediately, along with its
pixel dimensions, so you can preview without installing anything or converting first.
Why Windows struggles with HEIC
HEIC relies on the HEVC codec, which is patent-encumbered. That’s why Windows doesn’t open HEIC out of the box: you have to install Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions, and the companion HEVC Video Extensions actually cost money. Many people never get this set up — so a HEIC file just shows a blank thumbnail. SnapHEIC’s viewer sidesteps the whole problem by decoding the format itself, in the browser, for free. If you’d rather fix HEIC support on your PC permanently, see our guide on why a HEIC file won’t open on Windows.
Open HEIC on any device
Because the viewer is just a web page, it works the same everywhere — there’s nothing to install on any platform:
- Windows 10 & 11: open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and drop your file in — no Microsoft extensions needed. More options in open HEIC on Windows 11.
- Mac: HEIC already opens in Preview, but the viewer is handy for a quick look without importing. See opening HEIC on a Mac.
- Android: open it in Chrome to preview HEIC photos that your gallery app can’t. See opening HEIC on Android.
- iPhone & iPad: HEIC opens natively, and Safari decodes it instantly here if you just want to check a file.
Private and instant
The viewer follows the same rule as every SnapHEIC tool: your files never leave your device. HEIC photos are decoded locally with WebAssembly and displayed on the page; nothing is uploaded and nothing is retained once you close the tab. You can confirm it in your browser’s DevTools → Network tab, or simply turn on airplane mode and watch it keep working. There’s no account and no limit, so you can drop in an entire folder and flick through the previews.
From viewing to saving
When you’ve found the photo you need and want a permanent, shareable copy, converting is one click away. SnapHEIC can turn the same files into JPG for universal compatibility, PNG for lossless quality, WebP for the web, or PDF to combine several into one document — all just as privately.
